We wanted to know what difficulties a wheelchair bound students finds in a public school. For this porpouse we have gone form the parking of our school (IES La Serreta) to our desks in the classroom in a wheelchair. We have also checked the toilet, reception desk and some elements such as alarms, fire extinguishers, the public telephone, hangers, etc. It is important to consider that our school was built about three years ago.
These are our notes about the survey: 1. Car-park for the disabled: Not big enough for a wheelchair user. 2. Entrance to the school from the parking: Access blocked because of the steps of the threshold. That means that the person has to go around the building to find another accessible entrance. 3. Parking exit. 4. Very steep gradient: Too hard for those cases of high spinal cord injury. 5. Entrance doors to the school area: They shouldn't be so heavy. 6. Steep gradient. 7. Entrance to the school building: The doors shouldn't be so heavy. 8. Reception's desk. Correct. 9. Fire extinguisher in reception: It is too high. 10. Public telephone: It is too high. 11. Doors to the lift area: They shouldn't be so heavy. 12. Lift: Correct. 13. Fire extinguisher in the corridor: It's not easy to be used by a disabled person. 14. Alarm. 15. Adapted toilet (WC): We have to say that it is used as a storeroom because nobody usually uses it. 16. Entrance door to the classroom. 17. Light switch. It's not easy to be used by a disabled person. 18. Clothes hangers: They are too high. 19. Windows. It is impossible to open them from a wheelchair. 20. Tables. 21. Blackboard.
