Dear Alicia, Today I have thought a lot of you. This afternoon our teachers brought a few wheelchairs and we went from our school to the Town Hall to assess the accessibility of wheelchair users. We also tried to enter our school (extremely difficult task!) but, Dennise cried: Not accessible! (Of course not! There are three high steps at the entrance, narrow staircases everywhere, the toilets are minute!) Well, it is a very old building, in fact. Now I remember when I take you out in Rubí. That is really awful! You risk your own life to go up or down those streets, ... and the crossings, most of them without a drop. I understand very well when you tell me that you can't go out alone. But here is completely different. The pavements are wide, with drops at the corners, the land is flat, the street lights have a sound for the blind... If you were here I am sure you would not stop a single minute at home. THIS TOWN GIVES YOU FREEDOM!!! We checked the Art College, the Public Library and the Town Hall and filled in questionnaires our teacher from Spain had prepared for us. Everywhere, except our school, was fantastic. There is also a lot of information for disabled people everywhere you go. So, it does not sound strange to see a lot of disabled and old people in the streets riding those funny motorcycles! I miss you a lot. Take care, Lidia |
